Is Chaplaincy a church ministry?
Traditionally Chaplaincy is understood as a ministry outside the four walls of the church. However, chaplains can also benefit a church congregation as members of a church care team or assist pastors with visitation and other duties that involve crisis care or response.
What is the difference between a pastor and a chaplain?
Chaplain licensure and ordination are similar but different than pastoral/minister licensure and ordination. Chaplains are specifically trained to respond to and work with people in crisis. Chaplains are also trained to work with people regardless of sharing the same denomination or faith. Chaplaincy is a helps-based ministry.
Do Chaplains evangelize?
I.F.O.C. trains Chaplains to be the hands and feet of Christ. Evangelism is essential to Chaplains but is not the primary function in which they participate. Many can’t hear a salvation message while in a crisis, so, Chaplains “earn the right” to share their faith, demonstrating the evangelism message through love and service by meeting people’s needs first.
Do pastors qualify as Chaplains?
Chaplaincy requires specialized training, just as pastors do. Pastors can make excellent Chaplains but should receive training specific to that role, just as Chaplains would need additional specialized training before they could function as pastors. Each role is similar but does function differently. I.F.O.C. currently equips, licenses, and ordains many pastors as Chaplains.
